San Juan del Sur is located 88 miles (140 km) from Managua. Only 30 minutes from Peñas Blancas, Costa Rican border. It has a little more than 20,000 habitants. The main activity is fishing, which is plentiful and of great benefit for the population. San Juan del Sur is a horseshoe shaped bay. Because of the color of its waters, this beach will remind you of the Caribbean. San Juan del Sur was declared ‘Tourist City of Nicaragua’ very recently due to the number of cruise ships that have been arriving since 1998, full of visitors eager to get a closer look at the country's natural beauty and history.
The visitor will find several bars and restaurants next to the ocean and also very comfortable hotels and lodges. Close to San Juan del Sur are the beaches of "El coco", "Chococente", "El Astillero" and "La Flor", which are wildlife refuges and a turtle sanctuary for endangered species. From here you can reach the other interesting attractions that Nicaragua offers - Granada, the colonial jewel is only 1 hour away, San Jorge pier is only 45 minutes away and the road is in excellent condition, you can travel safely from San Juan del Sur to the rest of Nicaragua.
